Skiing, Snowboarding and you

Heliskiing, skiing, snowboarding or heliboarding are not usually offered at the same place. At Mica Heliskiing we understand this, and offer you great options including heliskiing, skiing snowboarding or heliboarding all this in one exciting package! If you're a single or a pair, we have intermediate or advanced small groups that you can join. If one of you boards and one skis – no problem, we will find terrain that suits your mix, after all we boast of a a million acres of snow just for you.

Mica Heliskiing works directly with Kokanee Helicopters to provide a professional standard of helicopter snowboarding. Mica Heliskiing primarily uses an A- Star six seat helicopter, with room for the pilot, guide, and four boarders, making snowboarding by helicopter or heliboarding a safe and exciting experience.

Whether your concern is good guides or reliable pilots, helicopter snowboarding with Mica Heliskiing will surely be safe and enjoyable. Floating in waist-deep powder, you ride down a sea of pure virgin snow, grinning from ear to ear. A thousand meters down and you're in the trees. Riding in the trees, the snow is just as deep, sheltered from wind or sun - unbelievable! Another thousand meters – and you spot your helicopter sitting in the snow, waiting to fly your small group to yet another run in heliboarding paradise.

Mica Heli operates in seven drainages or valleys, each with its own character and terrain style, each contributing to a diverse heliboarding experience. The tenure contains 470,000 hectares (more than 1 million acres) of spectacular peaks, huge alpine cirques and bowls, massive glaciated runs, with 50 percent of our terrain being steep tree runs. Combine the greatest terrain on Earth with 12-18 meters per year (40-60 feet) of dry, light, Rocky Mountains powder and the result is the perfect snowboarding vacation on the planet.

Mica Heliboarding includes 4,500 vertical meters or 14,764 vertical feet per day with the Standard Private Tour. That amounts to 103,345 vertical feel per week. We ride in two or three groups of four, and regularly double that vertical.

Making sure you're ready to face the elements

While there's some opportunity to warm up in the helicopter, most of the rides are short, and lunch is eaten outdoors, so be prepared to dress as if you'll be out in the elements all day long. Most people bring two or more snowboarding jackets for layering. After all, like it or not, you are at nature's mercy. Typical winter temperatures in the Rockies are usually -5º C to -15º C (23º to 5º Fahrenheit), but in mid-winter they can drop to as low as -30º C (22º below Fahrenheit), and it can be windy. So it makes sense to be prepared.

For helicopter snowboarding, bring multiple layers of warm, non-restrictive, breathable and water-resistant clothing, including a long underwear. Snowboarding jackets with "powder-skirts" and some good-quality cold weather mitts are a big advantage. High-quality, well-vented goggles are a must. If wearing a helmet, use one with a low profile or 3/4 coverage shell with removable ear guards so you will be able to hear your guide. The key for heliboarding is: function over form. Wool hats are far better than ball caps with bills, which are a big disadvantage around a helicopter. For evenings, casual wear (jeans or chinos) are normal. And don't forget to bring your swimming trunks for the hot tub. For riding deep light powder a little longer, a backcountry board is necessary. Step-in bindings are preferred, with your stance set to the farthest-back setting.

Mica Heli's lodge is in the backcountry, so do bring along spare parts. We have a very limited selection of boards at the lodge, so please bring your own or let us know if you would prefer to use one of our K2 powder heliboards.
